The event typically includes dinner, live auction & raffle, and live entertainment. Awards are presented to leaders in the community who are sources of advocacy and hope for survivors. National Crime Victims’ Rights Week Candlelight Vigil
Every April, the Office of Victims of Crime (OVC) helps lead communities throughout the country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) by promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf. In honor of NCVRW, Homicide Survivors Inc. hosts an annual candlelight vigil to honor the lives lost to homicide.
National Day of Remembrance for Murdered Victims
Each year, HSI hosts a local event in observance of The National day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, every 25th of September. We partner with a local community organization to create a dynamic memorial event for Survivors. Themes often include a digital photo montage of loved one, along with unique performances to honor the lives lost to homicide. The ceremony colunded with a candle lights and an opportunity for survivors to say their loves ones name aloud.
All Souls Procession
A Tucson tradition that takes place the first weekend of November, The All Souls Procession is “a sanctuary for community members from all walks of life to express their grief and loss in a celebration of creative energy and rejoicing of life.” Homicide Survivors began participating informally in this procession by inviting survivors to meet and walk through the procession together. Since the, it has become one of our staple community events. Crafting ceremonial pieces of art, such as flower crowns and decorating photos of loved ones, offers a non traditional therapeutic approach to celebrate the lives of those lost by homicide.
Every November, HSI hosts an evening of honoring our loved ones for our annual Thanksgiving Potluck. It is an opportunity to sharing stories, showing gratitude and supporting fellow survivors during the holiday season. We honor loved ones with memory boards and ask survivors to bring a favorite dish in honor of their loved one to share.
Angel Tree & Cookies with Santa
Every December, HSI partners with the Pima County County Attorney’s Office and member of the community to host a toy drive for children who lost a loved one to murder in the previous year. Families participate in arts in crafts while enjoying cookies, hot cocoa, holiday music and meeting Santa and special guests.
